Remembering World War II in Rome

This week marks the anniversary of a horrible tragedy in Rome that occurred during the city's occupation by Nazi forces in 1944.


Here is an excerpt from an article that I wrote about the tragedy that occurred at the Ardeatine Caves on March 24th 1944:

Nearly 70 years after the World War II tragedy at the Fosse Ardeatine, fresh flowers still line the graves at the sanctuary there. That mass executions that took place on March 24th 1944 are commemorated every year in the pozzolana quaries and caves on the Via Ardeatina, close to the Via Appia Antica south of the city walls...
